Sri Sri Ramthakur on Mind and Nama | শ্রীশ্রী রামঠাকুর — মন ও নামতত্ত্ব

Joy Ram 🙏

According to Sanatan Dharma, the mind, which arises in the heart, is considered the 11th sense and it dominates all other senses of the human body. Sri Sri Ramthakur explained the dangers of being controlled by the mind and the liberating power of Nama.

Teachings of Sri Sri Ramthakur on the Mind

  • Sri Sri Ramthakur said: “Mana Karoti Papani, mana lipyate Patakai” (Veda Bani 1/339, 343; 2/76, 217; 3/13, 58, 185). → The mind itself commits sin and becomes tainted with sin.
  • The mind is the source of: sexual desire, greed, hatred, malice, lust, excessive sleep, and overeating.
  • He who lives in the mind is a sinner. He who is guided by the mind is a sinner.
  • Therefore, the mind must be transcended if one wishes to be free from sin.

States of Mind According to Sri Sri Ramthakur

As explained in Dr. G.P. DevRoy’s Sri Sri Ramthakur Bhabanalok (Part 1):

  • When the mind is inactive, it is Mungari (bud-like).
  • When intelligence is inactive, it is Chinmay (soulful).
  • When breath is stopped, it becomes Brahmanda (cosmic).

The Role of Nama

Sri Sri Ramthakur emphasized that the mind becomes inactive when Nama is remembered. In that state, the devotee is no longer guided by mind but by God Himself. This is the true path to liberation.
